What to Do With Concord Grapes With Seeds
Perfectly tart and sweet, this homemade Concord Grape Jelly recipe (Concur Grape Jam) is succulent on everything from toast to crumpets to pancakes and Pb & J sandwiches, or to just swallow direct out of the jar!
This concord grape jelly recipe is easy to make, and a great way to use up that extra couple of punnets of grapes this Fall!
I never quite understood the lure of PB & J. Probably because I didn't eat Lead & J until I was an adult! Same goes for grape jelly. Jelly (or jam) fabricated out of grapes, slathered on my toast, never seemed like the most appealing thing in the world to me. But yous know, every bit the saying goes, don't judge a jelly by its fruit (what, that's non a saying?). Once I actually tasted grape jelly, I couldn't get enough of information technology!
The "starting time" fourth dimension I tasted concord grapes not too long ago, was a complete sensory retentiveness experience for me! I suddenly had this retentiveness of me as a kid devouring grapes that tasted exactly like that. And as it turned out, we had a concur grape vine in our backyard in New Zealand, except we didn't know what it was! Just that the grapes tasted succulent, and I couldn't stop eating 'em! Then I've been eating concord grapes and loving them since I was a child, I but had no idea! 🙂
This happy accident however, made me autumn in dear with agree grapes all over again.
Making concord grape jelly (concord grape jam) is really easy. Yet, the just problem with these grapes when it comes to making jelly or jam is the seeds. There are some varieties without seeds too, simply I haven't come across those yet. But the proficient news is that in that location are several ways to remove the seeds from the grapes, and whatever which way is fine, every bit long as it gets the chore done.
How to remove grape seeds when making concord grape jelly
Some recipes swear by cooking the concord grapes whole, with the skin. While this works for concord grapes without seeds, I've found that separating the skin from the grapes first makes it easier to remove the seeds. This can exist a tad time consuming, but it'south absolutely worth it in my opinion.
How to separate the pare from the grape pulp
All you need to do is simply pinch one cease of the grape (opposite from the stem) and clasp. The pulp within will pop correct out from the stalk end of the grape. Just remember NOT TO THROW Away the skin! The skin is what yields that deep purple color in this concord grape jelly recipe (concord grape jam). Also call back that the grape skin tin can stain your clothes, so be careful not to go information technology on your clothes when yous're removing the pare.
You can push the grape pulp through a sieve at the beginning, to split out the seeds as well. OR y'all tin soften the pulp a little by cooking it for a few minutes, and and then push it through the sieve. It's also a good idea to blend the peel and pass information technology through a sieve too, so that y'all don't end up with big pieces of skin in the concur grape jelly. Merely this is an optional pace. I sometimes don't do this footstep to my concord grape jam and information technology'due south e'er perfectly succulent.
How to test doneness with this concur grape jelly recipe
You can test doneness with the jelly examination method. First make sure to keep a few minor saucers in the freezer before y'all brainstorm making the hold grape jam. When you're about done cooking the jam, place a little of information technology on a cold saucer and freeze for nearly 1 minute (until it'due south cooled down). Then run your finger through the jelly and cheque how the jelly spreads/flows. If the jelly parts with your finger track and so meets upwardly in the middle over again immediately, and then it's all the same also runny.
How to store concord grape jelly / concord grape jam
Make sure to sterilize the bottles that you'll be using to shop this concord grape jam. If you're planning on eating it within a week, then yous don't have to practice this.. BUT, if you desire to go along it for longer, then sterilize the jars/bottles start. You can practise this past keeping the jars in boiling h2o for about vi minutes, OR by keeping them in a preheated oven(350°F/180°C) for about 10 minutes.
Jelly examination method
Then while the bottle and concord grape jam are warm, ladle the jam into the jars and shut. The jars volition grade a vacuum seal as they cool down. It is Admittedly important to ensure that both the jelly and jars are hot/very warm when you lot exercise this. If you ladle cooled down jelly into hot jars (or vice versa), the jars WILL interruption due to the temp. difference (trust me, it'south happened to me!).
This concord grape jam is absolutely addictive. If you've eaten concord grapes before and liked that delicious philharmonic of tart and sweet flavors, then y'all'll dear this concord grape jelly recipe! I've been spreading information technology on toast, crumpets and pancakes, and just eating it directly out of the jar as well! 🙂 And they make the all-time damn PB & J sandwiches in the world too!

Prep: 20 minutes
Resting Time: viii hours
Cook: 1 hour
Total Fourth dimension: one hr 20 minutes
Servings: servings
- iii lbs concord grapes nearly 6 - seven cups
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- Lemon peel (from ½ lemon
- Pinch of salt
-
Place a few pocket-sized saucers in the freezer before you start cooking the jam.
-
Rinse the hold grapes.
-
Remove the pulp from the grapes by squeezing one end of the grape (opposite from the stem side). This will pop the pulp correct out (see flick in post).
-
Place the pulp in one bowl, and the skins in a separate bowl.
-
Mix the pulp, sugar, lemon pare and salt in a bucket. Melt the pulp for about five - 10 minutes until softened, and the sugar is dissolved.
-
Pass the softened pulp through a sieve to remove the seeds (doesn't need to exist a fine sieve, just small plenty to catch all the seeds) and place it back in the saucepan.
-
The lemon peel will as well be caught in the sieve. Remove this and add it back in to the bucket.
-
Add the agree grape skins into a blender and add about ane - 2 cups of the pulp. Blend until smooth.
-
OPTIONAL - You tin pass this grape pare mixture through a sieve every bit well to have a super shine jam, but it'southward not necessary.
-
Add the concord grape pare mix (sieved or not), to the rest of the pulp in the saucepan.
-
Melt over medium heat, and bring the mix to a boil. Stir frequently to brand sure that the jam doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan.
-
Melt for about 45 -50 minutes. Do the jelly test (as described below) at around 45 minutes - identify a small-scale corporeality of jam on a freezing cold saucer. Put information technology back in the freezer for about 1 minute (until the grape jam has cooled downwardly, but non frozen). And then rails your finger through the jam to exam the consistency.
-
If the parted jam flows back hands and meets in the middle again, and so it'due south too runny. A slightly thicker consistency where the jelly/jam flows dorsum a little, but it's irksome and doesn't see in the centre again, is the perfect consistency for me.
-
If the grape jelly is still a tad too runny, cook for a few minutes longer. Test the jelly every 5 - x minutes until y'all become the desired consistency. I don't cook for longer than threescore minutes because this overcooks the jelly/jam on my stove. The fourth dimension may change according to your stove and pan that you utilise.
-
Remove the lemon peel, and let the jam cool down slightly.
-
While the jam is notwithstanding hot, ladle the jam into hot sterilized jars. Close the jars with sterilized lids, and allow the jam to cool down completely. Store in the fridge overnight, and employ After the jam has rested for at to the lowest degree 6 hours.
-
Shop in the fridge for up to 3 months. But one time opened use within 2 weeks.
Sterilizing Jars
-
Launder the jars and lids before sterilizing them. Place the jars and lids on a steaming rack, and fill the pot with water. Bring the water to a boil, and allow the jars and lids to boil for x minutes in the h2o. Remove the jars from the pot (apply tongs), and place them on a tray. Fill up the jars immediately with the hot jam and close with the lids.
-
You can start sterilizing the jars while the jam is being cooked. Then leave the jars in the hot h2o, until you're ready to store away the jam.
